Exclusive: Working-class whites are gloomy about future amid rising income gaps, racial shifts WASHINGTON — Four out of 5 U.S. adults struggle with joblessness, near-poverty or reliance on welfare for at least parts of their lives, a sign of deteriorating economic security and an elusive American dream. Survey data exclusive to The Associated Press points to an increasingly globalized U.S. economy, the widening gap between rich and poor, and the loss of good-paying manufacturing jobs as reasons for the trend. The findings come as President Barack Obama tries to renew his administration's emphasis on the economy, saying in recent speeches that his highest priority is to "rebuild ladders of opportunity" and reverse income inequality. As nonwhites approach a numerical majority in the U.S., one question is how public programs to lift the disadvantaged should be best focused — on the affirmative action that historically has tried to eliminate the racial barriers seen as the major impediment to economic equality, or simply on improving socioeconomic status for all, regardless of race. Pessimism among that racial group about their families' economic futures has climbed to the highest point since at least 1987. In the most recent AP-GfK poll, 63 percent of whites called the economy "poor." "I think it's going to get worse," said Irene Salyers, 52, of Buchanan County, Va., a declining coal region in Appalachia. Married and divorced three times, Salyers now helps run a fruit and vegetable stand with her boyfriend but it doesn't generate much income. They live mostly off government disability checks. "If you do try to go apply for a job, they're not hiring people, and they're not paying that much to even go to work," she said. Children, she said, have "nothing better to do than to get on drugs." While racial and ethnic minorities are more likely to live in poverty, race disparities in the poverty rate have narrowed substantially since the 1970s, census data show. Economic insecurity among whites also is more pervasive than is shown in the government's poverty data, engulfing more than 76 percent of white adults by the time they turn 60, according to a new economic gauge being published next year by the Oxford University Press. The gauge defines "economic insecurity" as experiencing unemployment at some point in their working lives, or a year or more of reliance on government aid such as food stamps or income below 150 percent of the poverty line. Measured across all races, the risk of economic insecurity rises to 79 percent. He noted that despite continuing economic difficulties, minorities have more optimism about the future after Obama's election, while struggling whites do not. "There is the real possibility that white alienation will increase if steps are not taken to highlight and address inequality on a broad front," Wilson said. ___ Nationwide, the count of America's poor remains stuck at a record number: 46.2 million, or 15 percent of the population, due in part to lingering high unemployment following the recession. While poverty rates for blacks and Hispanics are nearly three times higher, by absolute numbers the predominant face of the poor is white. More than 19 million whites fall below the poverty line of $23,021 for a family of four, accounting for more than 41 percent of the nation's destitute, nearly double the number of poor blacks. Sometimes termed "the invisible poor" by demographers, lower-income whites generally are dispersed in suburbs as well as small rural towns, where more than 60 percent of the poor are white. Concentrated in Appalachia in the East, they are numerous in the industrial Midwest and spread across America's heartland, from Missouri, Arkansas and Oklahoma up through the Great Plains. Buchanan County, in southwest Virginia, is among the nation's most destitute based on median income, with poverty hovering at 24 percent. The county is mostly white, as are 99 percent of its poor. More than 90 percent of Buchanan County's inhabitants are working-class whites who lack a college degree. Higher education long has been seen there as nonessential to land a job because well-paying mining and related jobs were once in plentiful supply. These days many residents get by on odd jobs and government checks. Salyers' daughter, Renee Adams, 28, who grew up in the region, has two children. A jobless single mother, she relies on her live-in boyfriend's disability checks to get by. Salyers says it was tough raising her own children as it is for her daughter now, and doesn't even try to speculate what awaits her grandchildren, ages 4 and 5. Smoking a cigarette in front of the produce stand, Adams later expresses a wish that employers will look past her conviction a few years ago for distributing prescription painkillers, so she can get a job and have money to "buy the kids everything they need." "It's pretty hard," she said. "Once the bills are paid, we might have $10 to our name." ___ Census figures provide an official measure of poverty, but they're only a temporary snapshot that doesn't capture the makeup of those who cycle in and out of poverty at different points in their lives. They may be suburbanites, for example, or the working poor or the laid off. In 2011 that snapshot showed 12.6 percent of adults in their prime working-age years of 25-60 lived in poverty. But measured in terms of a person's lifetime risk, a much higher number — 4 in 10 adults — falls into poverty for at least a year of their lives. The risks of poverty also have been increasing in recent decades, particularly among people ages 35-55, coinciding with widening income inequality. For instance, people ages 35-45 had a 17 percent risk of encountering poverty during the 1969-1989 time period; that risk increased to 23 percent during the 1989-2009 period. For those ages 45-55, the risk of poverty jumped from 11.8 percent to 17.7 percent. Higher recent rates of unemployment mean the lifetime risk of experiencing economic insecurity now runs even higher: 79 percent, or 4 in 5 adults, by the time they turn 60. By race, nonwhites still have a higher risk of being economically insecure, at 90 percent. But compared with the official poverty rate, some of the biggest jumps under the newer measure are among whites, with more than 76 percent enduring periods of joblessness, life on welfare or near-poverty. By 2030, based on the current trend of widening income inequality, close to 85 percent of all working-age adults in the U.S. will experience bouts of economic insecurity. "Poverty is no longer an issue of 'them', it's an issue of 'us'," says Mark Rank, a professor at Washington University in St. Louis who calculated the numbers. "Only when poverty is thought of as a mainstream event, rather than a fringe experience that just affects blacks and Hispanics, can we really begin to build broader support for programs that lift people in need." The numbers come from Rank's analysis being published by the Oxford University Press. They are supplemented with interviews and figures provided to the AP by Tom Hirschl, a professor at Cornell University; John Iceland, a sociology professor at Penn State University; the University of New Hampshire's Carsey Institute; the Census Bureau; and the Population Reference Bureau. Among the findings: —For the first time since 1975, the number of white single-mother households living in poverty with children surpassed or equaled black ones in the past decade, spurred by job losses and faster rates of out-of-wedlock births among whites. White single-mother families in poverty stood at nearly 1.5 million in 2011, comparable to the number for blacks. Hispanic single-mother families in poverty trailed at 1.2 million. —Since 2000, the poverty rate among working-class whites has grown faster than among working-class nonwhites, rising 3 percentage points to 11 percent as the recession took a bigger toll among lower-wage workers. Still, poverty among working-class nonwhites remains higher, at 23 percent. —The share of children living in high-poverty neighborhoods — those with poverty rates of 30 percent or more — has increased to 1 in 10, putting them at higher risk of teenage pregnancy or dropping out of school. Non-Hispanic whites accounted for 17 percent of the child population in such neighborhoods, compared with 13 percent in 2000, even though the overall proportion of white children in the U.S. has been declining. The share of black children in high-poverty neighborhoods dropped from 43 percent to 37 percent, while the share of Latino children went from 38 percent to 39 percent. —Race disparities in health and education have narrowed generally since the 1960s. While residential segregation remains high, a typical black person now lives in a nonmajority black neighborhood for the first time. Previous studies have shown that wealth is a greater predictor of standardized test scores than race; the test-score gap between rich and low-income students is now nearly double the gap between blacks and whites. ___ Going back to the 1980s, never have whites been so pessimistic about their futures, according to the General Social Survey, a biannual survey conducted by NORC at the University of Chicago. Just 45 percent say their family will have a good chance of improving their economic position based on the way things are in America. The divide is especially evident among those whites who self-identify as working class. Forty-nine percent say they think their children will do better than them, compared with 67 percent of nonwhites who consider themselves working class, even though the economic plight of minorities tends to be worse. Although they are a shrinking group, working-class whites — defined as those lacking a college degree — remain the biggest demographic bloc of the working-age population. In 2012, Election Day exit polls conducted for the AP and the television networks showed working-class whites made up 36 percent of the electorate, even with a notable drop in white voter turnout. Last November, Obama won the votes of just 36 percent of those noncollege whites, the worst performance of any Democratic nominee among that group since Republican Ronald Reagan's 1984 landslide victory over Walter Mondale. Some Democratic analysts have urged renewed efforts to bring working-class whites into the political fold, calling them a potential "decisive swing voter group" if minority and youth turnout level off in future elections. "In 2016 GOP messaging will be far more focused on expressing concern for 'the middle class' and 'average Americans,'" Andrew Levison and Ruy Teixeira wrote recently in The New Republic. "They don't trust big government, but it doesn't mean they want no government," says Republican pollster Ed Goeas, who agrees that working-class whites will remain an important electoral group. His research found that many of them would support anti-poverty programs if focused broadly on job training and infrastructure investment. This past week, Obama pledged anew to help manufacturers bring jobs back to America and to create jobs in the energy sectors of wind, solar and natural gas. "They feel that politicians are giving attention to other people and not them," Goeas said.

Americans fear government more than terror Astonishing poll results for 1st time since 9/11 hijackings According to a pair of recent polls, for the first time since the 9/11 terrorist hijackings, Americans are more fearful their government will abuse constitutional liberties than fail to keep its citizens safe. Even in the wake of the April 15 Boston Marathon bombing – in which a pair of Islamic radicals are accused of planting explosives that took the lives of 3 and wounded over 280 – the polls suggest Americans are hesitant to give up any further freedoms in exchange for increased “security.” A Fox News survey polling a random national sample of 619 registered voters the day after the bombing found despite the tragic event, those interviewed responded very differently than following 9/11. For the first time since a similar question was asked in May 2001, more Americans answered “no” to the question, “Would you be willing to give up some of your personal freedom in order to reduce the threat of terrorism?” Of those surveyed on April 16, 2013, 45 percent answered no to the question, compared to 43 percent answering yes. In May 2001, before 9/11, the balance was similar, with 40 percent answering no to 33 percent answering yes. But following the terrorist attacks of 9/11, the numbers flipped dramatically, to 71 percent agreeing to sacrifice personal freedom to reduce the threat of terrorism. Subsequent polls asking the same question in 2002, 2005 and 2006 found Americans consistently willing to give up freedom in exchange for security. Yet the numbers were declining from 71 percent following 9/11 to only 54 percent by May 2006. Now, it would seem, the famous quote widely attributed to Benjamin Franklin – “They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety” – is holding more sway with Americans than it has in over a dozen years. A similar poll sampling 588 adults, conducted on April 17 and 18 for the Washington Post, also discovered the change in attitude. “Which worries you more,” the Post asked, “that the government will not go far enough to investigate terrorism because of concerns about constitutional rights, or that it will go too far in compromising constitutional rights in order to investigate terrorism?” The poll found 48 percent of respondents worry the government will go too far, compared to 41 percent who worry it won’t go far enough. And similar to the Fox News poll, the Post found the worry to be a fresh development, as only 44 percent worried the government would go too far in January 2006 and only 27 percent worried the government would go too far in January 2010. The Fox News poll was unique in that it further broke the responses down by political affiliation: •Bucking the trend, 51 percent of Democrats responded they would give up personal freedom to reduce the threat of terror, compared to 36 percent opposed. •Forty-seven percent of Republicans, on the other hand, opposed giving up freedoms, compared to only 43 percent in favor. •Yet independents were the most resistant, with only 29 percent willing to sacrifice freedom, while 58 percent stood opposed. (Fabienne Faur/AFP/Getty) “He’s really polite,” says Jonathan Smith, president of the Black Student Union at Towson, a public university of more than 20,000 students in Baltimore County, Maryland. The number of white students at Towson reflects the demographics of Baltimore County, making up 68 percent and 65 percent of the two populations, respectively. Yet while 26.8 percent of Baltimore County residents are black, only 13 percent of Towson students are. “He doesn’t want diversity, but I’ve never felt like he’s trying to belittle me or not want to be in my presence. We’ve just talked and chilled.” It’s Heimbach’s views on race, not his pleasant demeanor, that have lured several reporters to this suburban college town in the past month. Back in March, the White Student Union went from a local news story to a national one when one of its members suggested, during a panel at this year’s Conservative Political Action Conference, that the Republican Party might benefit from segregation, and that Frederick Douglass's slave master did him a favor by providing him food and shelter. Since then, Heimbach and his crew have stayed in the spotlight with their announcement that they’d be patrolling the campus to combat what they claim is a prevalence crime targeted by black males against white females. As far as everyone else at the school is concerned, the talk of scouring the campus for crime so far has been just that: talk. But last week, Heimbach invited The Daily Beast, Vice magazine, and CNN (who ended up sending its reporter to Boston instead) to tag along on a patrol. Heimbach is, indeed, polite. Chubby, with black, buzzed hair and dark, beady eyes, he speaks with a Southern inflection and sprinkles the word “ma’am” into his explanation of how he “awakened to the essential displacement of our people.” The oldest of three siblings, Heimbach was raised by two public-school teachers in the small town of Poolesville, Maryland. Heimbach credits the writings of conservative commentator Pat Buchanan with inspiring the creation of the White Student Union. “I’m Jewish and they’re white supremacists,” said one student. “They’re neo-Nazis. They just want everyone to be as unhappy as they are right now.” “Buchanan talks about how whites are being displaced, becoming a minority in this country,” says Heimbach. “He talks about how growing secularism goes hand in hand with the destruction of European culture.” From Buchanan, Heimbach was introduced to Jared Taylor, founder of the magazine American Renaissance and proponent of “race realism,” which argues that every race is inherently self-interested, and other advocates of “white nationalism.” “I’ve always been put off by skinheads and neo-Nazis and the Klan because they don’t advocate a positive message,” Heimbach says. “They don’t advocate any solutions, really, but they also advocate hatred. I’m allowed to love my people.” Heimbach attempted to create a White Student Union at Poolesville High School but was shut down—despite, he claims, having 400 signatures of support—when the school deemed the endeavor racist. During his two years at Montgomery College, a community college outside Washington, D.C., he headed a chapter of the conservative youth organization Young Americans for Freedom. Before the start of his first semester at Towson in 2011, he helped form the now-defunct Towson branch of the Youth for Western Civilization, a former non­profit organization founded in 2006 in opposition to multiculturalism and affirmative action at American colleges. Towson revoked Youth for Western Civilization’s campus privileges in March 2012 when some of its members scrawled “White Pride” in chalk across the school’s Baltimore campus. At the time, Heimbach came to the group’s defense saying, “White pride is no different than gay pride or black pride.” Frustrated by what he calls “blatant double standards in our society,” Heimbach submitted an application for approval for his White Student Union during the first week of fall semester, 2012. It was rejected. It turned out to be a blessing, he says, giving the group freedom that the university chartered Youth for Western Civilization never had. He practically celebrated his induction into the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Hate Map. “Members of the Towson White Student Union were pleased to find this morning that the left wing Southern Poverty Law Center has decided that our stand against the genocide of the European people from the face of the earth, demographic displacement of Europeans from our homelands, discrimination in the workplace, and a call to end foreign influence over our domestic affairs has made us such a threat to the Left that they put us on the Hate Map,” he posted proudly on the group’s blog. The SPLC, for its part, has called Heimbach “the future of organized hate.” While Heimbach seems to revel in the attention, Bilphena Yahwon, who founded Be the Change Towson after the White Student Group attempted to get university approval, is troubled by the national media attention her school is generating. “WSU is not affiliated, supported, or endorsed by the university. Some students don’t even know it exists,” she said. “They’re not even a group, just a few individuals who are being obnoxious.” Towson University President Maravene Loeschke agrees. At a Unity Rally on campus earlier this month, she praised students for “coming together around the core values that we all share,” denouncing Heimbach as “one student out there giving a lot of misinformation.” 130417-towson-white-patrols-dickson-embed2 One member of the Towson White Student Union shows off his white, Southern pride with a collage of bumper stickers. (Caitlin Dickson) But what is described by Yahwon and Loeschke as “a few individuals,” only one of whom is actually a Towson student, is, according to Heimbach, a 57-member group of students (both undergraduate and graduate), community members, and students from nearby schools. Members must take an oath of conduct that includes a pledge to “defend, honor, and further knowledge of the Christian religion and create a future for the European people,” and participate in at least one event every two weeks. As of last week, the Towson campus police said it wasn’t aware of the WSU conducting patrols, and Smith scoffed at the news coverage. Yet Heimbach says they’ve done six patrols since announcing their plans last semester. They don’t claim to have witnessed or thwarted any real crimes, but say they that on their last patrol they came across two girls who were visibly intoxicated and sent them home in a cab. Preventing girls from getting raped is one of the main goals of these excursions and their plan, in the event of any real crime, is to call the police. And while Heimbach has cited the “very large problem of black­-male­-against-­white-­female crime” at Towson as justification for campus patrols, the university insists it has one of the safest campuses in the University System of Maryland, offering the latest report that shows Towson with the lowest crime statistics per capita among Maryland schools. Heimbach and five others are gathered at the Red Robin in Towson for pre-patrol beers and burgers. Four of the people there are “executive members” of the White Student Union—meaning they help organize and lead the group. Heimbach sits proudly at the head of the table, sporting a tight-fitting Youth for Western Civilization T-­shirt and two necklaces: one a short chain with a small medallion that hits his collarbone and the other a cross with a circle behind it that sits right on his chest. He introduces his team by first name only. Paddy, a Towson junior from Baltimore, is his right-hand man. Short but built, his head shaved, he speaks calmly but passionately about his desire to see the creation of a white “ethno­state,” free from the ruin of multiculturalism. To Paddy's right is his fiancĂ©e, Addie, a senior from Nashville who deplores feminism and credits Paddy with introducing her to the movement. Next to her is Ken, a 43­-year-­old who drove from Delaware to participate in his first patrol. I hitch a ride to the campus with Shane, a 26-­year-­old member of such organizations as the Maryland League of the South, the Sons of Confederate Veterans, and the Southern National Congress. He doesn’t live or go to school in Towson, a city he says is overrun with outsiders. As he opens the door to the passenger's seat for me, Shane nods to the back of his white Dodge pickup truck that is covered in bumper stickers that read “Native” and “Go home Yankee!” scattered throughout a collage of Confederate flags. “This is what you're going to be riding in,” he warns. Everyone reconvenes in a parking garage on campus to read a passage from the Bible and say a prayer before setting out on their mission. Other than the fact that a few of them are carrying large Maglite flashlights, they look just like a group of friends out for an evening stroll. If it weren't for the cameraman running backward ahead of them, drawing attention at every step with his glaring light, they might have managed to carry out the entire patrol without anyone looking twice. “That's the White Student Union guy,” sophomore Bria Brown says to her friends, all of whom are black, spotting Heimbach as the posse passes through the student union. “I recognized him from the news.” Brown's friend, fellow undergrad Ebony Spiller says she probably wouldn't have even noticed Heimbach and his crew walking by if not for the camera. She says she finds the idea of patrols pointless, figuring that they were just attention seekers. But Jonathan Adejoh, also a sophomore, disagrees. "I definitely would have noticed them," he says. "They look weird, kind of freaky. It's intimidating." Meanwhile, Heimbach heads for the Black Student Union to ask if any of their members want to join the patrol, crossing paths with members of the Jewish fraternity AEPi on the way. A ruckus erupts as one student becomes distraught. "I hate them," he declares, pacing back and forth, his face red. He declined to give his name. "I'm Jewish and they're white supremacists. They're neo­-Nazis. They just want everyone to be as unhappy as they are right now." Back outside, Paddy and Addie discuss what happened with the frat boys. "Most of the venom that is spewed at us comes from our own people, which I think says a lot," says Paddy. "I think it says that whites today have been brainwashed into complete and utter ignorance." He and the others don't seem to be aware of the fact that the young men they'd just encountered were Jewish. The WSU does not recognize Jews as white. Paddy and Heimbach insist that the White Student Union is a peaceful organization, focused solely on preserving white culture. But it's obvious that Heimbach likes to instigate. He makes a point of picking at a "Kony 2012" sticker on a pole. Later, he scrawls "Hitler" on a piece of poster board in the library under the question, "Who is your favorite author?" He poses for the cameraman with his arms crossed in front of a chalk board that says, "Take back the night." Around 9:30 p.m., the group decides to call it quits. It’s Monday, after all, and the campus is relatively quiet. Heimbach’s girlfriend—who says she is supportive but doesn’t want to be involved with the WSU for fear of negative backlash—meets up with the group on the walk back to the cars. They reconvene at a restaurant, where, over ice cream sundaes and $2 beers, they talk about the patrol and the “drug deal” they may have just witnessed (a person handed something suspicious to someone else through a dorm window). It’s hard not to wonder whether the media have given Heimbach undeserved notoriety. His views on race and the impending threat against white culture are shocking, at times confused, and, to many, offensive. Still, those who recognized him during the patrol—and even the student who grew angry at the sight of him—knew who he was. Not because he’s used violence, intimidation, or harassment against other students but because they’ve read and watched countless interviews with him. "Racist" Maryland Student Leader Vows Patrols Against Black Crime Posted in Anti-Black, Extremist Propaganda, Hate on Campus by Hatewatch Staff on March 27, 2013 White supremacist student Matthew Heimbach, a thorn in the side of Maryland’s Towson University who has led two racist campus organizations, says his White Student Union (WSU) will start patrolling the campus at night next week in order to halt what his group characterizes as a “black crime wave.” Heimbach, a 21-year-old who has said he had his “racial awakening” while still in high school, has been in the national news since earlier this month, when he and fellow WSU member Scott Terry interrupted panelists at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) with a series of racist arguments. Terry advocated “separate but equal” policies, described slavery as providing food and shelter to black people, and allegedly muttered, “Why can’t we just have segregation” in the exchange. The event, caught on videotape and broadcast nationally, was a severe embarrassment to CPAC, which has tried to avoid being tarred as racist. Now Heimbach, who describes himself as “commander” of the WSU (a possible hat tip to the late “commander” of the American Nazi Party), says that his group will be leading patrols of three male and one female student several nights a week. The men will be armed with heavy police flashlights and the woman will carry pepper spray. Under the headline “Black Crime Wave Continues!”, the WSU website claims that “every single day black predators prey upon the majority white Towson University student body.” Heimbach also told The Baltimore Sun that “every time the offender is a black male, usually between 18 and 25.” His website adds that “White Southern men have long been called upon to defend their communities when law enforcement and the State seem unwilling to protect our people”— a fairly obvious allusion, it appears, to the terroristic role of the Ku Klux Klan during Reconstruction. In fact, the university said in a statement, there is no crime wave, black or otherwise, although there have been concerns about sexual attacks and armed robberies. The school said that violent crime on campus fell 37.5% from 2011 to 2012. In response to Heimbach’s announcement, Towson also said that the WSU is not an officially recognized campus organization (it is allowed to rent campus facilities for meetings, as many other off-campus groups also may do); that Towson is “one of the safest campuses” in the Maryland state system; and that the general public ought not to “take the law into their own hands.” But the school added that it would increase its own evening patrols in a bid to make the campus community feel safer. The WSU is not some namby-pamby opponent of multiculturalism. Its website carries links to the Council of Conservative Citizens (CCC), the descendant of the segregationist White Citizen Councils of the 1950s and 1960s and a group that has described black people as a “retrograde species of humanity.” As part of its platform, the CCC opposes “all efforts to mix the races of mankind.” The WSU website also links to the website for “The Political Cesspool,” a radio show based in Memphis, Tenn., that specializes in sympathetic interviews with leading racists and anti-Semites. Heimbach’s WSU is not his first racist organization. For a time, he was the president of the Towson chapter of Youth for Western Civilization (YWC), another racist campus group that was headed nationally by Kevin DeAnna, another hard-liner who also has worked with white supremacist organizations. DeAnna quit that group in February 2012. Later last year, after members of Heimbach’s YWC chapter chalked “White Pride” on campus sidewalks, the group lost the support of the university administration and official status, leading to its collapse. At that point, the Towson group was the only remaining chapter of YWC, which is now apparently defunct. Heimbach then started the WSU as a replacement. Soon enough, it had gathered members like Scott Terry (Heimbach has claimed a highly improbable 50 members), whose own website includes sections with headlines like “Arguments Against Miscegenation” — that is, what the Klan would call “race-mixing.” Terry also writes about “Kinism,” a racist ideology that emphasizes close relationships among “kith and kin,” meaning members of the same race. It also links to the sites of the CCC and a racist journal called American Renaissance, whose leader, Jared Taylor, has written that black people are incapable of sustaining any kind of civilization. Taylor was brought by Heimbach to speak at a WSU campus event last August. In an interview with a white nationalist radio show last October, Heimbach detailed some of his racist views. Warning that the “enemy is at the gates,” he said that white people are “rediscovering who they are” and waking up to the threat. “We’re seeing other cultures take over essentially our country and are replacing what we knew and grew up with and what our ancestors fought and died for, for something entirely foreign,” he said. He said that while he didn’t agree with using Nazi symbols, he would not “insult anyone” by attacking them for doing that because “if you’re out there advocating for white interests … I commend you for it.” Heimbach doesn’t limit himself to racist student groups. Not the patrols, per se, but the people involved. Edward — I think it depends on in what regard one is advocating for “White” people. There are plenty of “White” people who are involved in various cultural heritage groups and activities, such as Irish Dance, various Scottish organizations, various Swedish-American organizations and festivities, Italian organizations, including the Knights of Columbus. Unfortunately, Germans have a tough time because of associations with the Nazis, although German-Americans are a huge group that is wound throughout “White” American culture. Also, frankly, many of the “cultural” activities that have a lot of adherents, such as Renaissance Faires (quite a subculture there, including me), Revolutionary War re-enactors, Pioneer Days and Pioneer groups, Civil War re-enactors (the ones I know — I am aware that there are some dyed-in-the-wool Confederacy buffs, but since I live “up north,” I haven’t personally encountered them, tend to be primarily celebrations of “White” culture, although I don’t know anyone who is involved in such groups who would seek to bar persons of other races or ethnicities from joining in. White culture is still pretty much “dominant” in the U.S., although most white Americans I know also revel in learning about other races, ethnicities, and their cultures. My question to you is why, given the large number of groups with which you could associate, you seem to feel alienated. If you are someone who would freak out if a 90% white group allowed “others” to also join in, well, I think you need to examine your reasons why (although you don’t say that you would freak out — I posed this as a hypothetical). As for Gandhi-like people who attempt to address oppression through non-violence, I suggest that you look around. There are many people like this of all races. They are attempting to fight poverty, unfair work practices, inequality in educational opportunities, environmental degradation, and the like. You may not know of their work, but there are plenty of people who are trying to make the U.S. — and the world — a better place. Join with them, why don’t you? When the Ottomans broke out of their minor beylik to conquer Anatolia and later the Byzantine Empire, one method of expansion was appealing to the local Greek nobility which often felt over-taxed or abandoned by the Byzantine emperors. The Ottomans promised Christian leaders the right to keep their titles of nobility in return for service to them. This was attractive to many of these types because the taxes that Christians paid(jizya) was lower than that demanded of Muslim(zakat) and in some cases of the Byzantine empire. Other, more ambitious types, converted to Islam so as to take part in the fortunes of the empire. Characterizing these Ottoman conflicts as “white vs. non-white.” Is just ridiculous because: 1. Europeans fighting the Turks didn’t call themselves “white.” 2. Not all Christians fought against the Turks, and some Muslims fought for the Christian side. The Ottomans divided communities by religion, not ethnicity, ergo what you would call “whites” who converted to Islam were integrated into the hierarchy of the empire itself. Chattel slavery was different because it made an entire “race”(their term) slaves in perpetuity. In Rome or Greece, if you were a slave there was a chance that your children or grandchildren could be born free. Also in those societies, there were usually some limits to what one could do with slaves. The Old Testament of the Bible is pretty brutal in regards to slavery, yet there are all kinds of limits imposed on slavemasters. American slavery, by contrast, made children born to black slaves automatically slaves, who could be split up at will. A black slave was to have absolutely no rights whatsoever. As one commentator of the late slavery era said, “A negro has no rights, which a white man is bound to respect.” The second aspect concerns the reason why miscegenation laws were first concocted in the American colonies. They came about shortly after the Virginia slave laws which would bring about the concept of “whites” and “blacks.” If blacks were to be slaves in perpetuity while whites were to theoretically have some kind of rights(little though they were for most people), it was important to prevent the kind of co-mingling which went on when black and white slaves worked together. Otherwise you’d eventually have children coming out more or less white, which was a problem for a society which proclaimed that blacks were slaves by nature.
